The Power of Apprenticeships

Check out Opportunity Nation’s latest blog praising Vice President Biden’s new consortium that enables students to receive valuable college credit for apprenticeships – an effective, if often overlooked, path to the middle class. Opportunity Nation partner Seattle Colleges is excited about this initiative, and we urge more community colleges to join this promising effort to skill-up young Americans.

Skills Gap

Great Boston Globe column this week about Siemens donating $660 million in software to Massachusetts schools and community colleges for skills training – the largest donation of its kind in Commonwealth history. This is a powerful example of private-public partnerships that can transform lives.

We were also happy to see Opportunity Nation Higher Education Council Member Monroe Community College (NY) mentioned in an Inc.com story on the skills gap.

Community Colleges & Remedial Education

The dirty secret about community colleges? Most students who attend take remedial classes, yet most students never pass or complete said classes. Remedial ed, therefore, is a huge obstacle to success. Read this story about forward-thinking institutions seeking to break this negative pattern.
