2013 Opportunity Index Launch

For the fall 2013 release of the Opportunity Index, Opportunity Nation’s goal was to serve our network and the broader opportunity field by sparking media coverage and resources for organizations working across the opportunity spectrum.

National Conversation:

The October 21, 2013 Opportunity Index release attracted widespread national media coverage by the Associated Press, U.S. News & World Report, CNN Money, MSNBC, FOX News, the Today Show and more. Stakeholder and Public Resources:

FL-grad ratesOpportunity Nation worked closely with pro bono partners Advisory Board Company and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld to develop a visually compelling briefing book on the 2013 Opportunity Index results that could be used by our Coalition and members of the public to portray why the 16 indicators of the Opportunity Index are crucial to an opportunity community. For partners seeking a deeper dive with more specific indicator data, Opportunity Nation created shareable infographics and fact sheets for all 16 indicators. We worked closely with approximately 20 Coalition organizations to review and develop content for the fact sheets, as well as blogs and other social media content. Convening Power:

IndexCommunityConversationIn November 2013, Opportunity Nation hosted three Opportunity Index Briefings in New York, Washington, DC and Boston for over 200 leaders in conjunction with Washington Monthly. Senators Bennet and Portman joined the DC event in the nation’s capital, which highlighted promising innovations and best practices to create opportunity. Each briefing also included a roundtable discussion, and attracted leaders from the education, business and nonprofit community as well as elected officials and policymakers.

Technology Overhaul:

The website was overhauled with new data and features. State rankings and national trends are now more prominently featured along with more simplistic site navigation. The data and methodology are more clearly available, and most impressively, all 16 indicators have a mapping feature, to more effectively visualize how the nation scores. Lastly, our 300+ coalition partners are also searchable via indicator and location. Explore the Opportunity Index website.
