Reclaiming the American Dream
In the thick of the Great Depression, historian James Truslow Adams described the American Dream as a “better, richer, and happier life for all citizens of every rank… That dream or hope has been present from the start. Ever since we became an independent nation, each generation has seen an uprising of ordinary Americans to save the American Dream from the forces which appear to be overwhelming it.”
Yet once again, that dream is at risk of being overwhelmed. And once again, we need an uprising of ordinary Americans to restore it.
With the help of our more than 250 coalition members, including United Way Worldwide, America’s Promise Alliance, Corporation for Enterprise Development, Jumpstart, World Vision, Points of Light, LIFT, and Year Up (just to name a few), Opportunity Nation is working to restore the American Dream by rebuilding the ladder of opportunity in our country, one rung at a time.
Using the research gleaned from the Opportunity Index, Opportunity Nation identified an early and critical rung on the ladder of opportunity that requires urgent action today: ensuring that the rising generation is equipped with the skills needed to compete in the current and future economies.
Our Shared Plan recognizes that multiple pathways are needed to engage today’s young adults who are looking for alternative ways to find success in school and ultimately a career.
We invite you to learn more about the Shared Plan and find out how you can become part of the effort to rebuild the ladder of opportunity in America and reclaim the American Dream for another – and our – generation.
